We would love to say that this revolver is "true to the original", we can't. Colt only produced the 1851 in .36 caliber and used only steel. Real 1851 Navy frames were too small for a true .44 caliber cylinder. To fit a .44 caliber cylinder onto a smaller Navy-sized frame, Pietta uses a "rebated" cylinder—where the rear of the cylinder is turned down to a smaller diameter to fit the frame window while the front remains wider. Still, although not an "original" the revolver is hugely popular and performs just as well as the original 1851 Navy.
