Product Description

By the mid-to-late 1800s, short-barreled side-by-side shotguns had earned a reputation on the American frontier. Express messengers carried them aboard stagecoaches to protect passengers, payrolls, strongboxes and whatever else was valuable enough for somebody to try and steal. The armed man sitting beside the driver became known as the shotgun messenger—and eventually gave us the expression “riding shotgun.”

There was nothing particularly sophisticated about the concept. That was the point.

A short double gun was compact enough to handle from a coach, simple enough to operate under pressure and gave its owner two shots without much machinery standing between him and the business end of the barrels. Side-by-side shotguns also became fixtures on farms, ranches and homesteads, where they served generations of Americans as working guns.

The Hartford brings that old formula back.

Its design follows the classic hammer-fired doubles of the late 19th century, with the exposed hammers, side-by-side barrels and unmistakable profile of the guns carried when the West was still being settled. It isn't a modern shotgun dressed up to look old. It's a replica built around a design that already proved itself more than a century ago.

And that is probably why people still want one.

Today, the coach gun has found another life with Cowboy Action shooters, collectors, hunters and people who simply appreciate old machinery that still makes sense. There are faster shotguns. There are guns that hold more shells. There are certainly more complicated ones.

But complicated isn't always better.

Break it open. Load it. Close it. Cock the hammers.

Two barrels waiting.

The Hartford isn't pretending to be from the Old West.

It's a working reminder of why the side-by-side became an American icon in the first place.
